Into the Mist

Into the Mist

Into the Mist

By Patrick Carman

“Take up your bread and your tea and I’ll tell you what happened that night at Madame Vickers’s House on the Hill.”
Thomas and Roland Warvold want to go on an adventure, but the only adventure they were going on was up and down the trash hill at Madame Vickers’s orphanage. Until they find a piece of paper.
That piece of paper alone takes them on a wild adventure, not exactly the adventure they were looking for, through lakes of fire, dungeons, caves, ravines full of bees and packs of ogres.
They end up befriending a talking puma, who helps the boys find the tower. The tower helps the boys find out the meaning of the paper and the mysterious markings on their knees. But first they have to go into the tower and get to the top. Then they realize the tower is over one hundred years old and about to fall over.
I suggest this book to a 4th or 5th grade reader looking for a good fantasy story. This book is an amazing one. It has an amazing plot, lots of suspense, and a whole lot of fantasy. It is like the prologue to the Land of Elyon series. It is amazingly written by an amazing author, Patrick Carman. It is probably the most amazing book in whole Land of Elyon series. It is based in a fantasy world on a giant platform like landform surrounded by clouds above a giant ocean stretching as far as the eye can see in all directions. The book is written in two different points of view. One half is written in Alexa Daley’s point of view and the other half is written in young Roland Warvold’s point of view.

It starts when three cousins Fone Bone, Smiley Bone, and Phony Bone are in Boneville. Phony wants to run for mayor but everyone hates him because he is the richest person in town and brags a lot about it. He also wants everyone’s money so there was an angry mob and they got ran out of town. They have been running for two weeks and went so far that they’re now in the desert!!! Will they ever get back? What’s going to happen to them?

I love this book because Jeff smith’s writing style it will make you laugh hard but then short after make you scream in horror! You would like this book if you like humor and graphic novels because Jeff smith will make you laugh so hard you will puke through your nose! Like this line: silly bone: oh well I guess you can whine all you want when yer the richest person in town. Phony bone: AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Smiley: oh silly me ex richest!

The Nerds

The Nerds

The Nerds

Author: Michael Buckley

Whether or not you like Science Fiction, you’ll like this book.  This book is an action-packed, page-turner, comedy for every 4th-6th grade kid.  The book is based on daily school life with a twist and the twist is that nerds are secret agents who have to save the world.

The reason I loved this book so much is that is seemed so real and reading it, I believed that this story could really happen.  Not to give away too much, but in the story nerds go into their locker, go down a shoot to a secret laboratory where they try out new gadgets and receive world-saving assignments.

At Burley, as Ms. King explained it, every body is a nerd, so at our school no one gets picked on and this is very different from the school in the book.  At this school, nerds get picked on and bullied and you’d feel horrible for them except they have super powers.  To find out more, you’ll have the book.

Incredible Inventions

Incredible Inventions

Incredible Inventions

If you like science you will like this book. It has inventions and who made them. It has information about trains, war weapons, TV, bicycles, and the Wright flyer. This is a magazine that has information on about 16 fascinating topics. It has comics.    Captions, photos text boxes, diagrams and more! The articles are short and very interesting.  One of the articles is on video games like sonic the hedgehog and pac man.  I think this book is good for 6 and up, I’m a 5th grader and I like
inventions. This book kept my attention on the book. This book helped me
understand how inventions worked. The colorful illustrations where very helpful.
The photos showed how they really looked like and helped describe inventions from leanardo da Vinci to video games. I recommend this book to kids who are interested in inventors and inventions.

The Battle of the Labyrinth

Battle of the Labyrinth

Battle of the Labyrinth

Percy fights an evil cheerleader in a band classroom. When he leaves the burning building after a fight he meets up with his friend Anabeth.  One of his friends from camp.  They head to Camp Half blood witch is a camp for all demi gods [Half god half human].  At Camp Half Blood you train for battles and worship the Greek gods.  When they get there they find out Luke a person who betray them is going to attack through the Labyrinth. Anabeth gets her first but most dangerous quest.  Together Percy, Anabeth, Tyson and Grover go into the Labyrinth.  They meet gods and monsters.  The Labyrinth is really dangerous it can even read your mind!  They see a titan rise from the dead and they find the lost god.  In this series there is The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters and The titans Curse.
I recommend this book to all 4th and 5th graders because it is reasonable text but it might be a little long for some readers.  If you have not read the other books in the series you should read them so you get lost in this book. But if you have this is one of the best books in the series. I think that because this one has the most action and adventure.

Peter and the Star Catchers

Peter and the Starcatchers

Peter and the Starcatchers

Hop on board for a sea sick ride with Black Stash, Slank, Peter, Molly and Little Richard.   Molly and Peter are helping a secret alliance called the star catchers. They are all on a race to keep the star stuff from one another & from each other!
But the star stuff lands on an island and somehow with its great power turns fish in to mermaids! Then when each race is ten feet away, the people on the island try to pick a fight so they can have the star stuff for themselves.  Who knows, they could be both?
This book is heart tugging and sometimes makes you laugh out loud and sometimes can be a little to suspenseful because it has a part where everyone has to work together to find a way back home.   Or do they get stuck on the crazy out of the ordinary island and the only to survive is to ask for help from the people on the island?   This book is heart melting with the struggle with friend ship and who will lead the team to save the star stuff and themselves from the dangers that lay ahead?  I recommend this book to fifth through sixth graders.

Herbert’s Worm Hole

Herberts Wormhole

Herbert's Wormhole

What if you wanted to travel through time? Would you build time travel suits for you and a friend? Would you drive a space car in the future? Would you eat pizza on bumper cars?
In the book Herbert’s Worm Hole, Herbert and his acquaintance Alex travel forward in time. They meet aliens and humans who are friends UNTIL a janitor says that humans are mean. The janitor gets everyone in town fighting one another. Alex and Herbert play a game. Their suits are equipped with virtual reality. They use the game to help everybody to get along.
My opinion is that I like the book. It is an action and adventure book with some humor. The story is gripping. I recommend this book to whoever believes in aliens or who likes video games.

The Sword Thief: The 39 Clues Series

Book 3 in the 39 Clues Series

Book 3 in the 39 Clues Series

The 39 clues book three is an amazing book, spectacular book; you do not know how great this book is. Amy and Dan need to travel a lot to get the clues, they need to get to Japan I think.  I like this book because it is a little funny, it has a lot of expression, and there’s a lot of action. I get a lot of connections with Amy and Dan in a book I read before called Hugo Cabret because his parents died just like Amy’s and Dan’s parents. When Dan and Amy were traveling they ran into a few relatives, their relatives will do anything to get that prize, so they mess with Amy and Dan, and Amy and Dan fight back!!!

I recommend this book to grades 3-6th. If you like adventure, traveling, and riddles you would enjoy this book.

The BFG

The BFG

The BFG

Have you ever dreamed about waking up in the middle of the night, look in out your window and seeing a 24 ft. tall giant blowing a horn in to someone’s window, and then the giant walks over to your window, ready to blow, and the giant see’s you looking up at him, and snatches you out of your bed? Ok, I can 99.999999999% guarantee you that you’ve never had a dream like that, but if you have, that’s a big, coincidence, because that actually happened to an orphan, an orphan named Sophie.

When Sophie can’t fall asleep, when she looks out her window, and see’s a 24 ft. tall giant, a giant named the BFG. When he see’s her looking at him, he snatches her up. She saw the village houses rushing by on both sides. The giant was sprinting down the high street. He was running so fast his jacket was streaming out behind him like wings of a bird. Each stride he took was as long as a tennis court. When they reached the giants home in giant country, (his home is in a cave.) he takes out Sophie and puts her on a big table, and then Sophie realizes that the whole cave is filled with jars. Jars filled with dreams.  But the problem is, the BFG is the only nice guy living in the whole secret place known as giant country, because right next to him live 9 flesh-eating giants, that are twice as tall, and twice as fast as the BFG himself. When the giant start to get suspicious of the BFG of hiding a human “bean.”(Being.)

Will Sophie survive?

I loved this book. It was a very funny book about a kid with a giant. If your looking for a humorous read by a first class author I recommend this book to you. I also recommend the book too ages 5 to. 5000 (almost all ages.) when you read this action packed book, you’ll be on your toes the whole read.

So, will Sophie survive? Find out in the BFG, written by Roald dahl.
